Dr. Heidi Popham began her tenure
at Georgia Northwestern Technical
College in 1995. Throughout the
years, she has served as director of
institutional effectiveness and vice
president of institutional effectiveness, eventually becoming executive vice president in 2016. She was
named president of GNTC in 2019,
and has overseen increases in enrollment, strengthened community
relations, and enhanced student services. James recently caught up with
Dr. Popham for an update on the
college, and what the college means
to the northwest Georgia area.
In your seven years as president
what are some major accomplishments achieved?
During that time GNTC has
expanded opportunities for students by growing high-demand
workforce programs, strengthening
partnerships with business and industry, and ensuring our programs
align with the growing needs of
northwest Georgia employers. We
continue to invest in upgrading
our facilities and equipment and
expanding our program options.
We have also strengthened
support services for our students,
including our first-generation learners, military-connected families,
dual enrollment and adult education students, while creating more
pathways that help individuals
earn credentials leading to meaningful careers. Whether through
our academic programs or economic development sessions, we have
focused on making education and
training more accessible and being
responsive to our citizens.
Another accomplishment
has been increasing our
partnerships throughout the
region. By working closely with our
secondary school systems, other
colleges, healthcare providers,
manufacturers, small businesses,
and community leaders, we have
supported new industries and
existing employers in creating a
stronger workforce pipeline for
northwest Georgia.
I am also incredibly proud of
our college family. Our faculty and
staff have embraced innovation,
demonstrated resilience through
extraordinary challenges, and
remained committed to providing
exceptional service to our students. Their dedication has allowed
GNTC to continue fulfilling our
mission of workforce development
by supporting student success.
