New shopping centers have been
built on both sides of the highway.
Several businesses have already
opened, while other businesses
have yet to come to shopping center planned near the new Publix.
Sharp, who was chairman for
several years of the county Development Authority before he won
election as county commission
chairman, said other businesses
would also be developed there.
“They haven’t told us what type of
businesses are coming there yet,”
Sharp said. “There’s also going
to be a residential section to that
shopping area.”
On the opposite side of Lake
Oconee Parkway, several new and
existing businesses are now situated in two completely separate strip
shopping centers. A second shopping center called Thunder Point is
being developed not far away at the
intersection of Lake Oconee Parkway and Scott Road. “There are 10

lots there; five are physically sold;
two of them are under contract; and
three of them ready to go.”
A new two-lane roundabout is
also slated to be built in the future
at the intersection of Lake Oconee
Parkway and Scott Road. Three other roundabouts are scheduled to be
built nearby in neighboring Greene
County. They will be located at Lake
Oconee Parkway at Carey Station
Road; Lake Oconee Parkway at Linger Longer Road; and Lake Oconee
Parkway at Merchants Village.
The new roundabouts are
part of a major four-lane highway
project that will stretch from Interstate 20 in Greene County all the
