level to upgrade the park’s status and
help us preserve thousands of acres
of nature and more importantly, our
history. It’s already a national draw
for visitors, but projections see that
growing exponentially with the designation change and expansion.
But let me get back to our people
because the facilities and the parks
wouldn’t be possible without the
people behind it booking the acts,
caring for our spaces, and hosting
the events that attract people here.
Our Macon Christmas Lights Extravaganza features a million Christmas lights flashing to a soundtrack recorded by the Macon Pops. It was all
the vision of one man, Byran Nichols,
and this past year it attracted 685,000
people Downtown (not including kids
under 16 or repeat visitors). With that
many people, there was a $7.1 million
impact to our local economy.
Bragg Jam is celebrating its 25th
year in July, and it brings thousands
of people Downtown for a day-long
Atrium Health Amphitheater
celebration of music. This volunteer
board puts together one of the greatest days in music to honor beloved
musicians taken from us too early,
and the proceeds all go to improving
our Ocmulgee Heritage Trail and
other efforts.
The annual Cherry Blossom
Festival is a ten-day celebration
spanning the entire county with
rides, a parade, fireworks celebration, nightly concerts, bed races,
food trucks, arts and craft markets,
and so much more. Last year, it had
nearly 190,000 unique visitors and
an economic impact of $6.1 million.
And that’s just a sample! There
isn’t enough space here to go into
detail about the Macon Bacon (baseball), Magnolia Soap Box Derby, Hispanic Heritage Festival, Pan African
Festival, Mercer University football,
Macon Music Half Marathon, Macon Beer Festival, Veterans Day and
Financial Infrastructure for Political Committees and Advocacy Organizations
