programs are especially becoming major priorities as
employers across industries seek workers equipped
for an increasingly technology-driven economy.
At the same time, Clayton State’s geographic
location gives the institution a strategic advantage
few universities can match. Situated near Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and one
of the Southeast’s largest logistics corridors, the
university sits at the center of industries fueling economic growth throughout the region.
According to Lewis, that proximity creates
opportunities not only for partnerships and internships, but for direct workforce pipelines into some of
Georgia’s most critical sectors.
Furthermore, Lewis believes the university’s
role extends far beyond simply awarding degrees.
“We want students to see Clayton State not only
as a place to earn a degree, but as a launchpad for
career advancement, economic mobility, and lifelong
success,” he said.
BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
When it comes to improving student retention
and graduation rates, Clayton State recently partnered with the National Institute for Student Success to evaluate and improve advising systems, firstyear support programs, career readiness initiatives
and academic pathways.
Lewis acknowledges that many Clayton State
students face significant outside pressures while
pursuing higher education. “We recognize that many
of our students balance work, family, and school responsibilities,” he said. “Flexibility and accessibility
remain extremely important.”
That philosophy has influenced both academic
planning and campus operations. Among the initiatives Lewis is most excited about is the development of a more streamlined “one-stop shop” model
for student services— designed to simplify access
to admissions, financial aid, registrar functions and
academic support in a centralized environment.
It would be remiss not to note that the university
is celebrating a major investment in its future after
receiving $14.5 million in state funding to renovate
and modernize the College of Health. The project
will expand educational opportunities and strengthen the university’s ability to train future healthcare
professionals at a time when workforce shortages
continue to impact communities across Georgia.
SHAPED BY PURPOSE
Lewis says his leadership style is deeply rooted in intentionality— something shaped by both
professional experiences and personal challenges
